Poutama is an activity book that was initiated when regular prison programmes were shut down due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. Designed to support mental health and personal growth. It features puzzles, creative prompts, and information in English and Te Reo Māori.

I worked within an established design system to layout the books and source the imagery. I handled the typesetting for the bilingual text, making sure the pages stayed clean, readable, and consistent across the whole series of activity books.

I worked on the second series as it had been renewed due to it being so well received. Throughout working on this project we received really meaningful feedback about how much this publication meant to staff and people in prisons.

Role
Updated the project brief to transition the format from a standard picture book to a graphic novel. Using draft illustrations by Laya Mutton-Rogers, I built layout grids to manage narrative pacing, typography, and speech bubble placement across multiple revision rounds.

A new avenue for rangatahi to engage with their pūrākau, ensuring this Ngāti Kuia legacy remains a living resource in homes and classrooms.

The book successfully launched to high acclaim and has been adopted by the Life Education Trust, who developed formal classroom resources to teach children resilience nationwide.
