Ngā Kete Kōrero
Project
Ngā Kete Kōrero is a levelling framework that organises texts designed to support ākonga learning to read in te reo Māori. This helps kaiako to match books to student reading levels.
Role
I joined this project during the second design round. Starting with a review of the draft sketches against the briefs to fix inconsistencies and make sure the text and images fit together perfectly. I handled the layout, typesetting, and colour checks, while also setting up the ISBN metadata and imprint page. Since the books are for students learning to read, accessibility was a huge focus. I had to check colour contrast and place solid background blocks behind the text to ensure readability. The biggest challenge was typesetting entirely in Te Reo Māori, which meant being incredibly careful about where to break and hyphenate letters correctly.
Outcome
Created a larger range of levels and topics to assist teachers and students of te reo maori.
